EARWIGS PEST CONTROL

Earwigs make up the insect order Dermaptera and are found throughout the Americas, Africa, Eurasia, Australia and New Zealand.

With about 2,000 species[1] in 12 families, they are one of the smaller insect orders. Earwigs have characteristic cerci, a pair of forceps-like pincers on their abdomen, and membranous wings folded underneath short forewings, hence the scientific order name, “skin wings.” Some groups are tiny parasites on mammals and lack the typical pincers. Earwigs rarely use their flying ability.

EARWIGS:  Pest Control

While earwigs don’t sting or bite and are not known to transmit diseases, these pests are still a source of frustration for many homeowners. Earwigs quickly multiply, so the sight of one usually means there are many more hiding nearby, and getting rid of them for good can be quite a challenge if trying to do it yourself.

How To Identify An Earwig Infestation

Earwigs can be more commonly found in basements, closets, hampers, laundry rooms, crawl spaces, garages, pantries, and anywhere dark and less trafficked by humans.

What Do Earwigs Look Like?

Earwigs usually measure between 1/4 to 1 inch long and have an elongate, flat body. They are typically pale brown with dark markings, or uniformly reddish brown or black, with paler legs. Their name comes from an old superstition that these bugs would enter people’s ears at night and bore into the brain; fortunately this is not true. People probably created this superstition because of the creepy looking forceps-like cerci that they sport. Earwigs actually use these as a defense against predators and to capture their prey. These bugs have four wings; the front wings are short and leathery and the hind wings are fan shaped and membranous and kept folded under the front wings.

Reasons To Treat Your Earwigs Problem Immediately

Earwigs are not considered dangerous to the health of you, your family or your pets, but they are considered a nuisance pest. They won’t bite or sting and aren’t known to transmit any diseases, but their sheer numbers inside your home can be an annoyance and they can also damage items in your home, including paper, photos, wallpaper and books. They are also known to release a foul smelling odor when crushed and some species of earwigs can actually squirt this liquid when frightened.
